I bent my wookie :(

bent-bike-chain

Went trail riding last night and noticed that my bike seemingly developed a mind of its own and was trying to shift by itself.  When I got back to the truck I looked it over and noticed that the chain somehow got twisted.  Not quite sure how it happened, but I am going to try and twist it back until I can get it replaced.

Monica Conyers guilty in Synagro bribery scandal

Paul Egan / The Detroit News

Detroit — Detroit City Council Pro Tem Monica Conyers pleaded guilty to a felony today in connection with the city sludge contract hauling scandal. Detroit’s top federal prosecutor said no other City Council members would be charged in connection with the contract.

Conyers, 44, spoke softly in federal court as she admitted taking bribes in connection with $1.2 billion Synagro Technologies Inc. contract the Detroit City Council awarded in 2007.

Conyers changed her position from opposing to supporting the deal to cast the deciding vote.

Conyers could be facing about three years in prison under her plea agreement. Her attorney, Steve Fishman, believes federal sentencing guidelines of 30-37 months apply.

Federal prosecutors believe she would get the full five years under sentencing guidelines.

She was such a charming woman.

Walk and Bike Lansing!

Posted on June, 25 at 7:50 pm

A couple weeks ago a gentleman came to my door asking me to sign a petition that would, in a nutshell, require Lansing to gradually make roads walk/bike friendly.  I declined because I was initially concerned about how this would be paid for.  As a guy who loves his bike, I am ALL for this but not at the expense of more important things.  If this would take away from needed city services then it shouldn’t happen just yet.

I just watched a presentation given by the Lansing Walking & Bicycling Task Force and decided to support the proposed ordinance.  They made a good case for its existence and are only asking for the amount budgeted for non-motorized transport work to be increased by ~2% (from money given to the city by the state for transportation work).

As of June 10th they had until July 1st to collect 2,000 needed signatures.  From their Facebook page it looks like they are getting there and I want to encourage you to sign your name and support it as well.  Keep in mind this is a petition to put it on a ballot only, it still needs to be voted on.

Best description ever

Meadow is a very friendly dog she loves people and children, she is very dependable and becomes protective of her owners when other dogs approach so she would need to be the only dog in the household or matched with other dogs in the home. This is a dog that likely was separated from her Mother and siblings before she had time to learn proper canine social skills. She then hyper-attached to her human family and cats in the family. (kind of what happens with geese if they imprint on the wrong species) Despite the playing and attempts to engage her in play by my dogs, she just doesn`t get it. She interacts with my dogs like a cat. Approach avoidance. Never reciprocal play. While in the office, try not to over indulge her with affection and treats. She needs to learn that it`s ok to be a dog, and to be herself. She`s a tad like Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction when it comes to other dogs approaching me when we are inside and she is near me. * Housebroken * Crate Trained * Loves People * Very Affectionate * Rides well in the car * Not destructive in the least * Cute as can be

Ok, so she’s a friendly dog but she’ll kill your pet bunny and boil it.  Cute as can be.

Parenting with Pete: Health care

Posted on June, 1 at 10:52 am

Last Friday evening Jenny and I were at Riv to take care of some things.  It also happened to be the night of of the 7th and 8th grade lock-in and the kids were just starting to arrive.  As we were getting stuff done some boys came into our room and one of them asked me if we had a band-aid.

Me: A band-aid? For what, that little scratch? Battle scars are manly!

Jenny: There’s a first aid kit in the kitchen in the cupboard next to the fridge.

Me: Oh, right.  There’s a first aid kit in the kitchen in the cupboard next to the fridge.

Kid: Umm, nevermind, I don’t need one.

Oops. :)
